The Infamous Small Talk Question and How to Answer it Correctly!

Most people, when you ask the question, “What’s your favorite movie?” have to think for a second. They go over every single movie they have ever watched… They have a small debate on which is the best… Then they usually say one that isn’t actually their favorite, because they completely forgot their favorite.

Most people aren’t good at answering this question on the spot.

I answer without missing a single beat. You might be wondering, what movie can make you so confident? That is a far too easy question.

That movie is the 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice.

Hear me out… Before I hear any criticism about my choice, let me explain myself.

Reason One: The Cast

The cast is absolutely outstanding. You have Ms. Elizabeth Bennet played by the actress Keira Knightley, who is famously known for her role in Pirates of the Caribbean as Elizabeth Swan. (It’s strange that her two most famous roles are both characters named Elizabeth!)

There is also the main love interest Mr. Darcy, who is played by Matthew Macfadyen. AND the actor Donald Sutherland is Mr. Bennet. (Sutherland is the fearsome President Snow in the original Hunger Games movies!)

The casting director DID NOT miss!

Reason Two: The Romance

A quote from the back of the movie reads,

“But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity”.

I will only cover my favorite scenes when referring to the love in this film, or this would be never ending.

Scene One: Mr. Bingley’s Party

The dancing scene at Mr. Bingley’s party goes a little something like this…

Mr. Darcy asks Elizabeth for a dance, and she agrees. (Wait for it) As they dance their conversation begins to quicken with intensity. (Ooo) They are bickering as they dance. (WAIT FOR IT!)

Suddenly the music grows louder, and they are the only two in the room! Everyone else disappears in their eyes because they are so focused on each other.

It doesn’t stop there.

Scene Two: Elizabeth’s Trip to Pemberley

Elizabeth goes on a trip to Pemberley to see Mr. Darcy’s estate. She is under the impression Mr. Darcy is out of town and will not be home. (Of course, things don’t work out that way.) Mr. Darcy is there when she visits.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!

This is where the ICONIC hand flex scene takes place. If you do not know the history around this hand flex, that is okay! Here is a picture of the masterpiece.

Scene Three: Not the First, but the Second Proposal

The second proposal scene is …EVERYTHING… and I do not say that lightly. EVERYTHING about this scene is a cinematic masterpiece. The music. The fog. The confession.

Mr. Darcy exclaims to Elizabeth,

“You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love… I love… I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.”

And then the movie wraps up with them talking about what they shall call each other for the future they get to share together. (I’m not crying, YOU ARE!)

Reason Three: The Music

The soundtrack… wow. All I can say is wow. It is composed by Dario Marianelli and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. You have most likely heard a good amount of the soundtrack in your average study music playlist. (The tracks “Dawn” and “Mrs. Darcy” are my two personal favorites.)

Reason Four: The Pause Test

The ability this movie holds to be paused at any point and be an amazing picture is insane. You can get a beautiful landscape shot, or an aesthetic image of a certain hand flex scene… Whichever scene you chose, the option for a breathtaking picture is handed to you on a silver platter. I am serious, try it!

My Final Words

The cast! The romance! The soundtrack! The still shots! It is easy to see why this movie has such a soft spot in my heart. Pride & Prejudice 2005 triumphs over all movies I have ever seen. If you have not had the pleasure of watching it (if it isn’t clear already) I highly recommend you do. Once you watch it you will be able to easily answer the dreaded small talk question.

Consider this your sign to buy, rent, or stream it!
